Non-profit organization Indianhead Club Pilsen realized a memorial plaque of Lt. Virgil Paul Kirkham, a pilot of P-47 Thunderbolt who died during his combat task on April 30, 1945.
He was the last American pilot who died in Europe during WW2. The memorial plaque was designed by Jan Vlček, graduate of Academy of Arts in Prague (Akademie výtvarných umění v Praze), and it was made by Art Studio Rudolf and Tomáš Matějka in Pilsen (Umělecko-modelářský ateriér Rudolf a Tomáš Matějka Plzeň). The memorial plaque will be dedicated on Saturday, April 30, 2011. A ceremony starts at 2 p.m. in front of municipal office of Újezd. Virgil’s brother, Marion Kirkham, his family and other veterans will take a part of the dedication. We would be glad if this memorial plaque could be an enduring place of pilgrimage that symbolizes our friendship and never-ending peace. Realization of the memorial plaque was financially support by Kirkham’s family, Pilsen Region and municipality of Újezd.
